Confidence & Self-esteem
We all experience times when we are less confident than usual and this can often depend on what situation we are in. However, for some people, a lack of confidence and belief in ones own abilities can have a real detrimental impact on their lives and sense of self-worth.
Confidence and self-esteem refers to how a person feels about themselves, how much they love who they are and how much they believe in their abilities to achieve and trust their own judgment. People who have a healthy level of confidence and self-esteem often feel happy, comfortable and secure within themselves. They are less likely to feel diminished by others when faced with opposing views and opinions and do not fear taking up new challenges, striving for their ambitions and embarking on new relationships and friendships with others.
However, when faced with low self-esteem and a lack of confidence, a person may rely on others to make decisions for them and often seek help before tackling a new activity. It can also lead to people questioning whether they are 'good enough' and can often allow their own personal boundaries to be pushed. People who have a lack of confidence and self-esteem can often find themselves feeling depressed and anxious. It may result in them not being able to challenge their abilities and achieve the things they want, leaving them with a fear that they will fail in whatever they do.
Lack of confidence and self-esteem can emerge at any point in a person's life, some people may have experienced a redundancy, relationship breakdown, illness or injury to name a few. However, others may have developed a low self-esteem and lack of confidence as a result of their childhood and the environment they grew up in.
A healthy level of self-esteem and confidence is hugely important to our sense of belonging, who we are in the world, and quality of life. It can also impact on the kinds of relationships we form with others.
How can counselling help my confidence and self-esteem?
Counselling can help you explore any beliefs and feelings about yourself and the underlying reasons for these. It help you explore early childhood experiences and anything that may have impacted on your confidence and self-esteem.
You may wish to develop more positive views of yourself or become more assertive in your work or personal life. Counselling can help you look at any goals that you wish to set but feel unable to achieve, help you explore any fears and beliefs you have and provide an opportunity for you to reach any goals you may have in a way that is safe and supportive.
